Geometric’s DNA of Software Product Development

The Early Years

Geometric’s tryst with software product development began in 1984 as the CAD, CAM R&D unit of Godrej and Boyce, one of India’s leading industrial houses. We were responsible for developing and maintaining a suite of products in areas of drafting, modeling, analysis and manufacturing.

As a small startup group, we chose against making heavy investments that are required for sustained sales and marketing in product vending and instead decided to extend our software product development capabilities for providing services to software vendors in the CAD CAM space. Thus started our relationship with Spatial in 1992 for developing and maintaining their ACIS Kernel, Body Healing and Shelling technologies. This was followed by a relationship with MSC Software in 1995 for developing and maintaining their Patran and Nastran line of products. With a focus on providing product development services in the CAx space, offshore development centers (ODCs) were set up for Spatial, MSC and SolidWorks. In 2000 we expanded our capabilities to Product Data Management (PDM) and Engineering Collaboration software through engagements with MatrixOne (now a part of Dassault Systemes) and Powerway.

Expertise in Complex Geometry and Algorithmic Programming

In parallel, we continued to invest in building our own Tools and Technologies to compliment complex areas such as geometry, topology, optimization and cutter path generation. We devised the Feature Recognition algorithm to recognize and manipulate features from a solid model. This technology was also used to develop products for downstream applications such as intelligent recreation of design intent lost due to translation from one CAD system to another and feature based machining. The algorithms for such technologies were developed in-house and we continue to be a leader in this space. We also wrote complex geometry based cutter path algorithms for mill, turn and mill-turn machining ranging from 2 to 3 axes. We used these algorithms to build leading products like CAMWorks, a feature-based parametric and associative CAM system that can automatically generate cutter paths in 10% the time of a traditional CAM system.

Mature Offshore Development Centers

Our engagement with SDRC in 1998 (now part of Siemens PLM Software) to develop and maintain their I-deas product was a significant milestone in our product development business. Our project based engagements also resulted in a Joint Venture with Dassault Systemes (DS), 3D PLM Software Solutions in 2002. Incidentally DS acquired Spatial, Solidworks and MatrixOne, all our then existing customers, further strengthening our ties with them.

The number of our product development relationships expanded to include smaller innovative customers who had limited expertise in software engineering. Geometric has also developed green field solutions in diverse domains such as image processing, structural engineering, metrology and orthodontics to tap these growing markets.

Through our long term strategic relationships with the PLM majors - Siemens PLM Software, Dassault Systemes and MSC Software and the growing mid-sized companies, we gained expertise in building both Desktop and Enterprise applications. Moreover, exposure to the leading engineering platforms enabled us to develop unmatched interoperability solutions and add-on products. Some of our patented technologies have been further endorsed by our key partners, Siemens PLM Software and Dassault Systemes, who have embedded these in their design tools. These technologies helped our customers take improved products to the market, faster.

We have engaged with our customers to develop industry specific solutions for multiple industries including complete solutions for the aerospace & defense, high tech, consumer products goods (CPG) and fashion & apparel segments on existing standard platforms.

Extending Our Capabilities

More recently, we have extended our software engineering capabilities into embedded systems and manufacturing solutions, as a logical extension to our technical capabilities and our partnerships with majors in the automotive, aerospace, high tech and industrial automation space. We continue to work with independent software vendors and vendors of software intensive systems to develop the software content for their products while maintaining our focus on the manufacturing and engineering sectors.

Success Enablers

With matured relationships, we have realized that the key success driver for long term partnerships is “delivery excellence”. We have leveraged our CMMI Level 5 capability of continuous improvement to innovate and develop a standardized delivery mechanism through automation and integration of productivity tools. We have developed an innovative mangement methodology called GAMe (Geometric Agile Management Methodology) based on Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), a Theory of Constraints (ToC) technique. GAMe enables application of ToC principles to software product development and project management. Our technology alliances enable us to keep pace with the latest technologies and constantly upgrade our competency set in order to stay ahead of the curve.

Integrated tool based delivery system and Geometric Agile Management methodology, GAMe result in :
  • 20-40% improvement in time to market
  • 30-50% reduction in overall costs
  • Rapid and seamless expansion of capacity for accelerated product delivery
  • Functional innovation for the customers
  • Mutual learning in product lifecycle processes

Committed to IP Protection

In order to safeguard the Intellectual Property Rights of our partners and competing customers, we have developed and implemented rigorous frameworks for IPR protection, including physical, logical and network security. The ISMS policies of Geometric are based on the ISO 27001 framework and can incorporate customer driven processes in segregated ODCs.
